No matter where you live in Delaware, you can find services to recycle a majority of the items in your household garbage. The average Delawarean generates an estimated 2,400 pounds of municipal solid waste annually. Existing recycling programs in Delaware capture only about 22 percent of the waste generated by Delaware’s households and businesses.
In Delaware, the mandate to “develop a comprehensive statewide system of recycling and resource recovery which maximizes the quantity of solid waste materials which can be recovered, reused or converted to beneficial use” rests with the Delaware Solid Waste Authority under 7 Del. C. Chapter 64.
We can, and should, keep more recyclables out of the landfills. This will help to conserve resources, save energy, extend the life of the landfills, and promote sustainability.
